My Review of Silhouette Stencil Material *spoiler alert: it's amazing!*

 tháng 5 28, 2014     crafts, fabric paint, Silhouette Cameo, Silhouette Tutorial     No comments

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been a little MIA lately...we are still living at my dad's and YEP my craft box is STILL packed up.  :(  BUT - I'll try really hard to make it up to you with lots of fun crafts when I get my own house with my own craft room (hopefully!). We put in an offer on a home today, but the house is already under contract, so we are just a backup offer. We probably won't get it, so we are continuing to look...hoping we find that one special home soon!

Today, I've got a Silhouette tutorial for you. I originally guest posted this on Get Silvered and am excited to share it with you guys now! For those of you who don't know, I own the Silhouette Cameo and L-O-V-E it. I use it for almost every craft I make.  One in particular is the Maternity Countdown Shirt that I sell {SHOP}. I make each shirt by hand and would cut out a stencil for the numbers each and every time. It was kind of time consuming and used up a lot of vinyl per shirt. Just a couple months ago, I found out that Silhouette sells a -- you ready for this? -- REUSABLE STENCIL MATERIAL!!!!!! I pretty much freaked out and immediately bought some to try out. Well, it's AMAZING! It's basically a thin plastic that I use over and over and over again. I make so many shirts with one stencil - it saves me SO much time and money. This post is all about my review and a tutorial for cutting and using it!

The Stencil Material comes in a tube. This is great for storing, but not totally great for the stencil material itself. Mine had a few bubbles (you can see in pic below) which made me think at first that the cutting part did not cut all the way through. I was happy to see when I unloaded it that it did cut perfectly - I just had to pull the stencil off the paper backing carefully to make sure it came off along the cut lines in a couple of places. {addition: since I wrote this review, I've purchased more stencil material, and it didn't bubble. Maybe it was just my first try...!}

Load your stencil material into your Silhouette (no cutting mat - remember to adjust your rollers!) with the stencil material facing UP (paper backing on the bottom). Design your stencil in Silhouette Studio and click "Send to Silhouette." In the Cut Settings, just scroll down and pick your material - which is Stencil. It will then show you what to adjust your Blade & Rollers to. Easy peasy - now CUT!

This is what my stencil looked like after I cut it and removed it from the paper backing. YOU NEED TO KEEP THE PAPER BACKING! You'll put the stencil back on the paper backing after you use it, so you can keep it and use it again! See all of the number "inside" parts? Like the inside of the "8" and the "0" and the "9" - etc. ? I put those in a little plastic bag, to keep, so I don't lose them, since you need them for your stencil. You guys - I seriously can't tell you how much I love having a reusable stencil!!!!!!! It saves me SO much time. It's just awesome. :)

Another awesome part?! No transfer tape! Nope! The stencil is so sturdy that you can just place it directly onto whatever your stenciling by hand. *sigh* Total dream.

Paint your project (remember to put something UNDER your project, so the paint doesn't seep through!), let dry (use a blow dryer to speed up drying time!), and you're done! Remove the stencil - and SAVE IT for your next project. I just LOVE this new stuff. It's seriously awesome, if you can't tell.  :)

You have to let me know if you try this out and what your experience is. Here are some more projects I've used a stencil cut with my Silhouette Cameo:

Cheap Mother's Day Crafts and Gift Ideas

 tháng 4 28, 2014     affordable, cheap, crafts, creative, cute, DIY, easy, gift, ideas, inexpensive, mom, mothers day, present     No comments

Mother's Day is one of the easiest holidays to come up with a gift that your mom will love. Because most moms love anything that their children give them, especially if it's homemade. Moms are easy to please, loving, and appreciative.

But because it's Mother's Day, you want it to be special. That doesn't mean expensive. Here are a list of ideas that you can create for your mom this year that she will love:

"White board" frame. Just add scrapbook paper inside
 the picture frame, and add a dry erase marker!

Decorate a soup can for storage purposes.

Add a pin cushion to the top of a jar lid for a sewing kit.

Create a DIY cookbook with your favorite recipes,
or a family recipe cookbook!

Find foot, hand, cellulite, or other scrub recipes on Pinterest,
and put it in a small jar.

You'll need: homemade cupcakes, toothpicks,
styrofoam/floral foam, and a pot.

Mod Podge photos to coaster and coat with a waterproof paint/spray.

Create a coffee table out of creative objects.

Make a homemade nail polish remover kit.

Nail a shape onto a board and wrap string around it for a cute wall decor.

Press painted footprints or hands of the family on a stool.

Create DIY coupon voucher booklet.
Here are some examples: http://bit.ly/1c1QeTy

Mod Podge photos onto letters for wall decor.

Hand Painted Burlap Coasters

 tháng 3 26, 2014     burlap, crafts, DIY, gift ideas, paint     No comments

Happy Wednesday! Today, I'm sharing a project I originally guest posted on Newly Mynted. I just LOVE burlap and found these burlap squares at Michael's for pretty cheap. My mind immediately went to "COASTERS!" These were fun to make - you can use any color of paint and customize them however you want. They'd be adorable as a personalized wedding gift or housewarming gift, too.

Supplies
Burlap squares
Acrylic paint
Foam pouncers | Q-tips | Foam brush {whatever you want!}
Acrylic sealer {not pictured}

This is the fun part! Decorate your coasters however you please. You can use a stencil, but I just painted by hand my designs. I think using a vinyl stencil in the future would be fun.

Tip: Use a q-tip for making polka dots! You can also use this technique on your nails with nail polish.

One thing I'm crushing on? Aztec prints and glittery gold everything! I made an aztec design with gray, white, pink, and glittery gold paint. I broke my q-tip in half and used the non-cotton part to paint with. Try experimenting with different brushes and things to paint with!

The last thing you want to do is use your acrylic sealer to spray over the coasters. This will waterproof them, which you'll need when your Dirty Diet Coke gets all sweaty. :)

Burlap +  Polka Dots. Think I obsess much? Ha. I seriously use those two things in so many projects. Maybe I'll marry them. I love them so much.

Speaking of things I love so much - my dear friend Pamela from Macdonald's Playland had a baby last week!!! On St. Patrick's Day. You can read her lovely & inspiring birth story HERE. Miss Pamela asked me to guest post on her blog, which I'm doing in a couple weeks! Until then, Pamela has put together an AMAZING giveaway to celebrate the birth of her sweet baby boy. I feel so happy to be part of this special giveaway celebrating an even more special baby. Enter the giveaway by clicking the link below!

DIY His & Hers Sharpie Mugs

 tháng 3 03, 2014     crafts, DIY, gift ideas, marriage, super easy     No comments

This week is different than a normal week here at Put A Bird On It. Saturday, March 8, is my anniversary! 6 years! What an incredible 6 years it has been.

Salt Lake LDS Temple
Because I love LOVE so much {I really do - I did a giveaway dedicated to it!} - everything this week will be about LOVE and MARRIAGE! Including a special post about my marriage on Friday. I've never done a "theme" week, so I'm excited to do something new.

To start off Marriage Week, I have an awesome {and duh EASY} tutorial for you that is ALL about a HIS and a HER. I had so much fun seeing how much everyone loved my West Elm Inspired Sharpie Mugs that I wanted to make another version. I created a funky set of His & Hers Sharpie Mugs. Snuggle up by the fire, put on your favorite Star Wars movie and sip some hot cocoa with these duo mugs.

One of my very first memories of being married was our first morning in our home. I made us breakfast! Ha ha, those were "the days" ... me cooking ... but, really, I did. All I can remember is that toast was involved. But we sat, just the two of us, at our little yellow hand-me-down table, with our green IKEA dishes, in our 1920 little yellow house, and we ate breakfast together. It's one of our favorite memories. And I sure wish we'd had these mugs at that breakfast. How fun would that have been?!

stencils. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut my stencils out of black vinyl. You can free hand your design onto your mugs, if you are good with that kind of thing. I need a stencil! If you would like a full step-by-step tutorial on how to design stencils in Silhouette Studio, leave me a comment. I will post the full version, if people want it! Here is the short version: Design, size & position shapes in SIL Studio. You'll need 4 stencils: lips, mustache, HIS, HERS. When picking a font for your words, choose one that isn't very curvy or thin. You'll want some bulk to the font to be easier to trace with your sharpie. Cut designs out of vinyl with your Silhouette machine.

click photo to enlarge
Once your have your stencils, cut around them, leaving just a little border around the outside of the stencil. Peel away the inside part of the vinyl, leaving the negative space, which is what you'll color in. Place your stencils on your prepped mugs. I didn't use transfer tape - it is easier to position without. I had to make a cut on each stencil to position it, since the mugs are curved.

sharpies. Color in your stencil with your sharpies! I used a couple different techniques. At first, I just scribbled. It worked well for about 5 seconds, until my sharpie started running out and the lines were just taking off the sharpie rather than coloring in the mug! You'll notice the HIS mugs has more white in the mustache - that's because I was just coloring it like a crayon, which isn't the best way. It didn't bother me, because I thought it looked kind of cool like a real mustache, so I left it. But I didn't want that for my luscious, red lips {no one likes smooching chapped lips!}. The better technique was to do LINES, one of top of the other, back and forth from the middle of the stencil to the edge. Once you start drawing on your mug - you'll know what I mean!

bake. To keep your mugs kickin' it for a long time, remember to bake them! I have all those directions & tips on my previous mugs post {HERE}.

Done!

I am dying to see your sharpie mugs! If you make some for you and someone you love, link it up here. I hope you enjoy Marriage Week here on my blog. See you back here tomorrow. A very good friend is guest posting {it might include a recipe for a cookie for 2! you know you want IN on that}.

Hug someone you love today.

Happy 100 at Put A Bird On It

 tháng 2 22, 2014     About Me, blogging tips, crafts, hunger games, just plain cool, LDS     No comments

YAY! A couple days ago, I reached my 100th post here at Put A Bird On It. I almost didn't write anything special because of this... but I just couldn't let that lovely number pass me by without stopping and reflecting. It's like a birthday ... you kind of get a chance to pause and think about the past and everything that has brought you to this point. I thought a little commemorative post was in order, so that's what you get. Since I have new followers since starting at post number 1, I thought you might like to get to know a little about me ... the girl behind Put A Bird On It. It might get a little wordy, but hey, that's just "me" - I like to write! So thanks for being here on my blog and experiencing this crazy beautiful life with me.

I'm married to that guy.

And momma to this girl.

{here's where it gets a little wordy...it's the only spot, I promise!}

I learned to play the piano when I was 3. I've been playing ever since. Music is my outlet. The one thing that I can always control. When I was growing up, if ever I was sad, I would sit at my piano and play. I would play everything away. Music is my life. I grew up in Springville, Utah. We had season tickets to all the BYU basketball & football games, which means I will bleed blue until the day I die. I have 3 sisters and 1 brother. My parents divorced when I was 13...or 14...I don't really know...don't we all kind of block that stuff out? {enter: major music zone, haha} I grew up with my dad and sister and that's where most of my memories are. My dad and I would play music duets (him on trumpet, me on piano) almost every night. My sister and I, every Thursday night, would order pizza & breadsticks and watch the new episode of Friends ... watching for my dad to come home, so we could hurry and change the channel before he saw what we were watching {yep - I grew up with satellite TV but all the channels were blocked except Disney - and I loved it!}. I love DISNEY everything. I can quote the movies like nobody's business. I own all the Disney Sing-A-Long videos. My life dream is to go to Disneyland. Every. Year. I home schooled from junior high until my junior year of high school. I joined choir and was in the school musicals - that saved me. Again - music. I graduated in 2006 and entered a music program at Utah Valley University {UV High, baby!}. I met two of my very best friends there through the music program ... one of which, on a Tuesday night, introduced me to a very cool dude that would one day become my baby daddy. Music has been a key part of every good thing in my life. I married the coolest dude I'd ever met on March 8, 2008, in the Salt Lake City Temple, for time and all eternity. We bought a little yellow house in west SLC. Two months after moving in, our basement flooded, and that began the 5-year renovation of our home. We've made our house into a home and it is 100% US. A few crazy beautiful years later {and I mean crazy beautiful years}, and it was time to grow the fam. On December 10, 2012, Ava Noelle was born. Joy that can't be described or spoken was felt that day. We've just been kicking it in our home ever since. My mom and I have really become close since I've had Ava. I love seeing their relationship and getting to know my mom better, too. Every get together we have to cry at least once {but at least we get it out of the way at the beginning, right, Mutti?!} I love being a wife and a momma. Both have brought the hardest moments in my life - but, more importantly, both have proud the most pure joy I have ever known. Speaking of pure joy, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints {aka "I'm a Mormon"}. I have hope and faith in so many things, many of which you can learn more about by visiting LDS.ORG <<<

I have been blogging for a couple years now. I started my blog as a way to journal my crafty adventures. It really took off when the Maternity Countdown Shirt I made for myself during my pregnancy went viral on Pinterest! You know that really wholesome TV show {i hope you read my sarcasm there} on MTV about Teen Moms? Well, they featured my shirt on their Facebook page. My sister called me freaking out all excited and, I have to admit, I felt pretty cool that day. Apparently the countdown shirt thing is really popular amongst teen moms, ha ha. I really started trying to grow my blog in August 2013; and, here I am, plugging away. I have had some amazing experiences just through blogging.

A few of my faves:

I've met some of the BEST people, too. I can't even name all the amazing bloggers I've met, but you know who you are! Although we haven't (all) met in real life, I love my bloggy friendships. :) AND, I have some really exciting things starting this year. I feel so blessed and happy with where my life is at right now! You never know where you're going to end up - so enjoy the journey.

Ok. So there aren't 20 questions. But I did ask on Facebook what you'd like to know about me, so I'll answer those questions here!

What made you start your blog?

Well, I answered that a little above, but it was really just a way to document any crafts I made. A little creative outlet. Just for me! Then, I realized I love blogging and crafting and wanted to expand into blogging about other parts of my life ... like how I am a terrible cook, but trying to learn, and my new found love of design, and of course all things baby Ava! I love blogging so so so much. It really helped me get out of a crazy funk I was in a few months post partum. Now, I couldn't stop blogging if I tried!

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book has always been The Princess Bride. It was the most clever and witty book I ever read in high school, and I still love it! Harry Potter and Hunger Games come next {but not book 3 of Hunger Games - it was written too much like a movie script! boo}.

What is your favorite "adult" drink?

Hmmmm, well, I don't drink alcohol, so a dirty diet coke {Mormon Style} is as "adult" as I get, ha ha. I am completely in love with pina coladas, though. They are my most favorite drink. Ever.

What is your favorite movie?

AHHH! This is such a hard question. It's like: who do you love more, your mom or your dad? That question is impossible to answer! I have several that are my go-to movies. My husband and I love trilogies and go through them every year:  Dark Knight, Bourne, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars {ok, that one's a six-ogy}, and all the Mission Impossibles. Any Leonardo Dicaprio movie is amaze in my book {have you seen Blood Diamond?! So good!}. Favorite comedy: Zoolander! I can quote it from beginning to end {or did you think I was too stupid to know what a eugoogily was?}. Favorite chick flick: yes, I'll admit it, I love Jennifer Lopez! Maid in Manhattan, The Wedding Planner - love them all. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is up there, too. I kind of love movies, if you can't tell.

If you want to know more fun trivia, you can view my Q&A from when I was nominated for The Liebster Award <<

Here are some of my favorite projects I've done. Just a taste of how I Put A Bird On It.

****************************************************

Well, you've reached the end of my Happy 100 post. If you made it this far, you rock! Thanks for supporting me and reading my blog. At Build Your Blog Conference, I learned that you never know who is being touched by something they read on your blog. I had moments at BYBC where people I look up to were excited to see ME and people that knew who I was because they follow me on Instagram. I'm not bragging - trust me - it was just the craziest most surreal moment and each one added fuel to my fire to keep doing this crazy beautiful blogging thing. There are hard times. There are down times. There are doubtful times. But there are also fun times. There are learning times. There are happy times. There are kick butt amaze times. Plus, it helps that I have a super supportive husband that lets me show him everything I bought at Michaels that day and explain each project its for, takes photos of me pretending to be a fashion blogger, doesn't tell me the glowing light from my Mac is annoying in bed at 1am, and really is just super supportive in my little adventure.

But I couldn't do it without YOU. Your LIKES, your shares, your comments {I read every single one and still get nerdily excited every time someone comments!}, just all of it. I love it all. Thanks for putting birds on things with me. :) {ha - I don't think I've ever actually put a bird on anything! hmmm...I've got some work to do...!}

Here's to the last 100 posts and the hope of 100 more from this gal.
